Internships

Internships are high-impact learning experiences that provide students with the opportunity to apply some of what they’ve discussed in their WGS coursework in a real-world context.  WGS will work with any WGS major or minor to develop an internship that will be exciting and educational to the student, and will help them make plans for future career or educational goals. An internship is among the "experential learning" options required for the WGS major and is optional but encouraged for minors.

Requirements to Earn Academic Credit for Internships

  • Email Director of WGS, Lauren Ravalico, to discuss internship opportunities.
  • The internship must be related to the field of Women's & Gender Studies and approved by the Director.
  • The Intern must enroll in WGST 381 with an Individual Enrollment form as this is the experiential learning course associated with the internship program. The Director of WGS offers WGST 381 during fall, spring, and summer semesters. Prerequisites for WGST 381 are: Introduction to Women's & Gender Studies (WGST 200 or HONS 174) + 30 hours completed coursework at CofC.
  • Summer enrollment in WGST 381 requires payment of part-time summer tuition (unless the class transfers in from an affiliated program).
  • For internships outside of the U.S., use this form for the Center for International Education (CIE).

Getting an Internship on the Academic Transcript (Non-credit Option)

The Certificate Internship Program (CIP) through the CofC Career Center is an alternative that enables the internship to be recorded on your academic record even if academic credit is not an option.

Finding an Internship

It is the responsibility of the student to find an internship, although we will gladly make suggestions and explore options with you. WGS is committed to supporting students in this process and to this end we have several ongoing partnerships with local organizations that may be of interest to you.
